‘A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.’
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One’s Own Penguin Classics 1928
We would add to this…‘if she is to write anything’. For, while the circumstances of women have changed dramatically since 1928, it is still often the case that women are unequal in gender opportunity. We have therefore given bricks, mortar and a credited bank account to this ideal and that ‘room’ is a tiny cottage, Church Cottage, in the village of Clifford Chambers near Stratford-upon-Avon.
We offer older women writers and artists residencies in Church Cottage where they are able to pursue their own work in domestic peace without interruption. Many of these residencies also carry bursaries. As with many things, this is not always as simple as it seems, so please check out the pages below for more information.
